Commuter Bikes vs. NYC Citi Bikes

If you live north of 60th Street in NYC and are interested in commuting or just rolling two wheels via the new NYC Citi Bike program, you are S.O.L. There are no stations on the Eastside or Westside north of 60th Street and none in the plans.

So, time to roll your own commuter bike or you could just stay inside.

Plenty of bicycle parking on the UWS! Henry's at 105th & Broadway just installed some great bicycling parking furniture in front of their restaurant.

I've seen a few of these Fuji Cambridge bikes around. A nice looking ride.

If you are a bit more hardcore and want a performance rig that can fold and can be stored inside, this Tern Verge is pretty slick.

This Linus Roadster ride parks near our building. Missing a few parts and some rust on the chain, but it gets ridden everyday.

On Long Island, our family rolls with Electras that we bought and rode while living in La Jolla, California. The trailer arm is a Trail-Gator that attaches to our son's bike and can be removed and secured to the side of my bike so he can ride.

I saw this custom Merenyi  posted on pinterest. Beautiful bike.
This Spot Brand Sprawl is my favorite! I ride a Spot Rocker Single Speed mountain bike and love the belt drive and the craftsmanship of the Spot bikes. Plus, they are from my home state of Colorado!
If you prefer, you could just stay inside on a stationary bike.

Happy Riding!

The eGames? Ok, this could be interesting. Now to get more information... Well, there is very little online and no website that I can find. The presentation to the Barrie city council this past October revealed some ambitious plans for the city of Barrie, Ontario Canada.

I have seen the event group Graham Fraser has started, Centurion Cycling, and have no doubt that he can pull off a great event. I'd love to see more information on the eGames.

If the eGames are going to be compared to and positioned as the endurance sports version of the xGames, there certainly needs to be some marketing and hype to them.

I'm keeping my eye out.

Bouker the 'Young Master' is My Name

I am often asked about my name "Bouker", well, more than often. I cannot remember a time where I have met someone and they have NOT commented on the name, usually with an odd expression on their face and: "that's an interesting name, is it real?"

So, here is the story of how I got my name as I have been told by my parents:

My father comes from an aviation obsessed family and built, flew, jumped out of, towed, glided, crashed and fixed a lot of airplanes in his youth. All with the assistance of his brother Tommy and father, Chief. Yes, my grandfather goes by the name of Chief, another fun story for another day.

During my mother's pregnancy with me, my father and Chief were building a Bücker Bü 133 Jungmeister in the garage and each evening my mother would enter the garage and ask, "how is your 'Bouker' coming along?" mispronouncing the 'Bücker' with 'Boo-ker'.

The Bücker Bü 133 Jungmeister (Young master)
was an advanced trainer of the Luftwaffe in the 1930s.
It was a single-engine, single-seat biplane of wood and tubular steel construction
and covered in fabric.

In response my father would walk over pat her on the belly and reply, "great, how is yours?"

It was their little inside joke about each having a project.

So, you can call me 'Bouker' the 'Young Master' if you so please.

Opportunities Ahead!

There is so much fragmentation in the endurance sports (Running, Cycling & Triathlon) and Healthy Active Lifestyle/Fitness industries.

There is a real opportunity for some one to take charge and build a brand that engages, inspires and empowers consumers with healthy active lifestyle content grounded in fitness and driven and supported by nutrition, fashion, technology, gear, family, friends and social networks.

The first critical pivot point is this YouTube video which evokes the power of social media and the incredible shift happening within content distribution, consumption and sharing. This video is a great reflection of the impact within sports and is a catalyst to make sure brand marketing is using each and every tool to create a meaningful connection between brands and consumers:
The second point is how a brand can become more then just a product, experience or service and deliver content to consumers that engages, inspires and empowers them to identify and adopt a brand as a part of their lifestyle; just as the Red Bull and Red Bull Media House has used the action sports platform to create a brand synonymous with a lifestyle.
The opportunity lies with inspiring and empowering consumers to seek out the core products and brand experiences that mean something to them and create a sense of belonging:

Red Bull is a publishing empire that also happens to sell a beverage. Lately, every conference PowerPoint on the future of advertising or PR seems to mention Red Bull as a — if not the — shining example of a brand-turned-publisher, what every future-leaning agency encourages its clients to emulate.

Physical Activity as Wonder Drug

Bouker Pool – Proud Ambassador of New Campaign to Get Americans More Fit & More Healthy

New York, NY – May16, 2013 -- Bouker Pool is proud to become an ambassador for PHIT America, a new cause dedicated to help America overcome the obesity and sedentary crisis while helping to prevent health care cost before they happen.  Today, the percentage of Americans who are sedentary is increasing. And, we all know how obesity is driving up health care costs.

PHIT America ( is a new initiative launched by the sports and fitness industry to increase the number of Americans who play sports or get active and fit. Research conclusively shows sports and fitness activities help Americans burn calories, get fit, build self-esteem, and reduces other medical and physical issues. According to Dr. Thomas Frieden, Director of the CDC, “Physical Activity is the wonder drug”.
Launched in January 2013, PHIT America distributes News Flashes and articles to Americans through its network of 130+ sponsors. As one of PHIT America’s Ambassadors, Bouker is helping to spread the word about the importance of an active lifestyle.

On, you will see the latest news and trends on the obesity and sedentary crisis, advantages of getting fit and active, why physical education is so important, and a new “yellow pages” of places to play sports and get active throughout the U.S.

“Once you click on the red Participate bar on, you will see a list of 60 different sports or activities,” said PHIT America founder Jim Baugh.  “Then, click on any sport and you will see different ways of being active, each with search engines giving locations in your area.”

PHIT America is also supportive of two pieces of U.S. legislation that will help create a more active, healthy America. The PEP Program supports school districts with grants for physical education programs. Today, the average school budget for physical education is only $764 per year and 48% of schools have NO physical education at all for students. Schools and our children need the continued support from the PEP Program.

The PHIT Act is another important piece of legislation. It would allow Americans to use Pre-Tax Medical Accounts to get reimbursed for physical activity expenses. As Baugh states, “We need to give Americans an incentive to get active and fit. The PHIT Act will help families across America find more economical ways to be playing sports, join a sports league or join a fitness class.”

Both of these pieces of legislation would help prevent health care costs by getting America more active and fit. We encourage everyone to send a letter to Congress with your support. There is an easy to use approach at

For more information on PHIT America, go to You will be proud of the cause that you will be supporting.
